Winter Reading 2008

San Francisco's rollicking reading and performance series 

                Featuring  Lola Haskins & other performers         

Lola Haskins is the author of more than a dozen books including poetry, environmental writing, essays and collaborative projects including the combination of spoken word with other musical elements in performance. Among her awards are the Iowa Poetry Prize, the Writer Magazine/Emily Dickinson Award from the Poetry Society of America, and two NEA fellowships. Her latest publications include Not Feathers Yet: A Beginner's Guide to the Poetic Life, and Solutions Beginning with A, a collection of original fables about women.

 

Poetry

The evening featured a performance by poet  Anne Shaw, whose debut poetry collection, Undertow, was the winner of the 2007 Lexi Runitsky Poetry Prize and presents an exploration of sexual desire, gender identity and mortality. 

 

 Featured Literary Publication

Our featured literary publication was The Big Ugly Review, which showcases emerging and established writers, photographers, filmmakers and musicians. Each issue contains fiction, nonfiction, poetry, photo-essay, short films and original music based on the issue's theme.  

Elizabeth Bernstein, editor of The Big Ugly Review, presented writer April Sinclair.  April is the author of three novels, Coffee Will Make You Black (a Carl Sandburg Award winner and American Library Association Book of the Year); Ain't Gonna Be The Same Fool Twice; and I Left My Back Door Open.

 

Up and Coming Writers

San Francisco writers Kerry Donoghue and Peter Sheehy also read from their work.
